1) "Rigid" -- As to rigid endoscope rig·id Pronunciation: 'ri-j&d Function: adjective Etymology: Middle English rigide, from Latin rigidus, from rigEre to be stiff 1 a : deficient in or devoid of flexibility <rigid price controls> <a rigid bar of metal> b : appearing stiff and unyielding <his face rigid with pain> 2 a : inflexibly set in opinion b : strictly observed <adheres to a rigid schedule> 3 : firmly inflexible rather than lax or indulgent <a rigid disciplinarian> 4 : precise and accurate in procedure <rigid control of the manufacturing process> 5 of an airship : having the outer shape maintained by a fixed framework - rig·id·ly adverb - rig·id·ness noun synonyms RIGID, RIGOROUS, STRICT, STRINGENT mean extremely severe or stern. RIGID implies uncompromising inflexibility <rigid rules of conduct>. RIGOROUS implies the imposition of hardship and difficulty <the rigorous training of recruits>. STRICT emphasizes undeviating conformity to rules, standards, or requirements <strict enforcement of the law>. STRINGENT suggests severe, tight restriction or limitation <stringent standards of admission>. synonym see in addition STIFF Pronunciation Symbols In mathematics, suppose C is a collection of mathematical objects (for instance sets or functions). Then we say that C is rigid if every c C is uniquely determined by less information about c than is necessary a priori. It should be emphasized that the above statement does not define a mathematical property. Instead, it describes in what sense the adjective rigid is typically used in mathematics, by mathematicians. Some examples include: - Harmonic functions on the unit disk are rigid in the sense that they are uniquely determined by their boundary values.
- Holomorphic functions are determined by the set of all derivatives at a single point. A smooth function from the real line to the complex plane is not, in general, determined by all its derivatives at a single point, but it is if we require additionally that it be possible to extend the function to one on a neighbourhood of the real line in the complex plane. The Schwarz lemma is an example of such a rigidity theorem.
- By the fundamental theorem of algebra, polynomials in C are rigid in the sense that any polynomial is completely determined by its values on any countably infinite set, say N, or the unit disk. Note that by the previous example, a polynomial is also determined within the set of holomorphic functions by the finite set of its non-zero derivatives at any single point.
- Linear maps L(X,Y) between vector spaces X, Y are rigid in the sense that any L L(X,Y) is completely determined by its values on any set of basis vectors of X.
- Mostow's rigidity theorem, which states that negatively curved manifolds are isomorphic if some rather weak conditions on them hold.
- A well-ordered set is rigid in the sense that the only (order-preserving) automorphism on it is the identity function. Consequently, an isomorphism between two given well-ordered sets will be unique.
- A rigid motion of a subset of Euclidean space is not always defined the same: it may be any distance-preserving transformation of t..."
2) "Endoscope" -- As to rigid endoscope en·do·scope Pronunciation: 'en-d&-"skOp Function: noun Etymology: International Scientific Vocabulary : an illuminated usually fiber-optic flexible or rigid tubular instrument for visualizing the interior of a hollow organ or part (as the bladder or esophagus) for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes that typically has one or more channels to enable passage of instruments (as forceps or scissors) - en·dos·co·py /en-'däs-k&-pE/ noun Pronunciation Symbols Endoscopic images of a duodenal ulcer A flexible endoscope. Endoscopy means looking deep and refers to looking inside the human body for medical reasons. Endoscopy, using a borescope, is also used in engineering and techical situations such as the inspection of nuclear fuel elements, aircraft or engines where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible. The instrument used is called an endoscope. - 1 Overview

| Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic medical procedure used to assess the interior surfaces of an organ by inserting a tiny tube into the body, often, but not necessarily, through a natural body opening. Through the scope one is able to see lesions and other surface conditions. The instrument may have a rigid or a flexible tube and not only provide an image, for visual inspection and photography, but also enable taking biopsies and retrieval of foreign objects. Endoscopy is the vehicle for minimally invasive surgery. Many endoscopic procedures are relatively painless and, at worst, associated with mild discomfort although patients are sedated for most procedures. Complications are rare (only 5% of all operations) but can include perforation of the organ under inspection with the endoscope or biopsy instrument. If that occurs open surgery may be required to repair the injury. Endoscopes consist of three tubes; a light emitting fibre, a fibre which transmits the image to the physician and tube which can be used for the administration of drugs as well as having the ability to hold a brush or incisor instrument for the removal of damaged body tissue or for taking tissue samples. One can distinguish: - the ..."
